About Fylo
Fylo is a South African marketplace for buying and selling better second-hand goods.
Keep the hunt. Lose the doubt.
We built it around a simple idea: finding something great second-hand should still feel like a bit of a treasure hunt, but figuring out what you’re actually buying shouldn’t.
Second-hand buying and selling already happens everywhere. In WhatsApp groups, on community pages, through classifieds, between friends, friends of friends, and that one person who always seems to know someone selling exactly what you need. And that’s part of what makes it good. There’s something satisfying about finding the thing you’ve been looking for at the right price, from someone who no longer needs it.
The problem is the uncertainty that can come with it. What condition is it really in? What’s included? Is anything missing? Which version is it? Has the payment actually cleared? Is this going to take twenty messages to figure out?
Fylo exists to take some of that guesswork out of the deal.
We encourage sellers to give buyers the useful stuff upfront: clear photos, honest condition details, relevant product information and anything else worth knowing before someone commits. The aim isn’t to turn second-hand into sterile ecommerce or take the personality out of the experience. It’s simply to make buying and selling feel clearer, easier to understand and better considered.
The treasure hunt is good. The guesswork isn’t.
So, what’s our deal?
Think of Fylo as the “I know a guy” of second-hand. The person who knows where to find the good stuff, who can tell you when a deal looks decent, and who gives you the heads-up before you make a mistake.
That’s how we want Fylo to feel: useful, straightforward and in the know. Never sketchy, never pushy, and never pretending to guarantee something we can’t. We’d rather give you the right information and let you make a good call for yourself.
Trust, for us, comes from transparency. A better listing doesn’t need to shout about being trustworthy if it already tells you what you need to know.
Why are there only a few categories right now?
Because this is V0.
Fylo is launching small on purpose. We’re starting with categories built around hobbies and interests, including board games, gaming, puzzles, crafts and other gear people tend to know, love, collect and pass on. They give us a focused place to prove the idea properly, learn how people use the platform and get the fundamentals right.
But those categories are not the definition of Fylo.
We’re starting with hobbies. Fylo is bigger than that.
This is where you come in
V0 is our chance to learn from how people actually use Fylo. What gets listed. What gets bought. What people search for. What works. What doesn’t. And, importantly, which categories people want next.
If South Africans use Fylo, support it and show us where the demand is, we’ll keep expanding the marketplace from there. So if the thing you want to buy or sell doesn’t fit neatly into Fylo yet, that doesn’t mean it never will. We may simply not have got to your category yet.
Public interest is what helps shape what comes next.
Where we’re going
Ultimately, we want Fylo to become the place you check before buying something new. Because there’s a good chance the thing you want is already sitting somewhere in South Africa, owned by someone who’s ready to let it go.
Our job is to help the two of you find each other, give you enough useful information to know what you’re dealing with, and make the transaction feel a little less uncertain when you do.
Good stuff deserves another go.
And before you buy new?
We might know a guy.
